My name is Sanja and I am a biochemistry professor at the Medical University of Graz (MUG) and a former scientist. I am currently responsible for the scientific coordination at the GSRS center for signaling, metabolism, and aging.
My idea is to expand the GreenLab initiative to the whole MUG so that all labs use less energy and make less waste.
I got the idea because I live by these principles.

Andrea is the laboratory manager in the Schleper group and a former scientist.

He is a problem solver and initiator of the laboratory plastic waste sorting. His aim is to raise awareness that a different way to do things is possible and that small efforts by everyone will lead to a real change.

Max is a PhD Student in the Schleper lab focusing on archaeal genetics.

He is working towards the establishment of a model organism for ammonia oxidizing archaea, key players of the global nitrogen cycle.

Jen is a MSc student in the Herndl Baltar group and working on bacterial ctenophore degradation and its implications for the biogeochemical cycles in the ocean. As a Student Assistant she invests her time to work in a project focusing on bacterial membrane bound vesicles.

Board Member

Logan is a PhD student in the Schleper Lab studying the nitrogen cycle. Specifically, he is focused on ammonia oxidizing archaea and the role these organisms have in the global carbon and nitrogen cycles.

Senior Staff Scientist in the Archaea Biology & Ecogenomics group in the University of Vienna. Interested in the intersection of science & politics, and believes that collective action can change the world.

İpek completed her PhD in the Archaea Physiology & Biotechnology group in the Department of Functional & Evolutionary Ecology at the University of Vienna and continued her research as a Post-Doc in the same department. In her research, she focused on developing bioprocesses for renewable energy generation (more specifically bio-hydrogen) with artificial ecosystem design. She is currently working as Associate Director of Research and Development in a Viennese start-up, Arkeon Biotechnologies, that aims to convert inorganic gases (e.g. CO2) into organic food.

İpek is one of the seven board members of Green Labs Austria. She is mainly working on protocols generation, meeting moderation and communication (between members and board), and plastic recycling.

Thomas is a PhD student in the Schleper group in the University of Vienna, studying biofilms in ammonia oxidizing archaea. He is especially interested in enzymes connected to the process of ammonia oxidation and the nitrogen cycle.
Thomas is investigating how to reduce and recycle different kinds of plastic waste in the lab.
