Who we are
The Gotthardt Group is based at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna within the Department of Biological Sciences and Pathobiology, Unit of Pharmacology. Our research focuses on natural killer (NK) cell biology, with particular emphasis on immune dysfunction, aging, and malignancy. We investigate NK cells in health and disease, encompassing mechanisms of NK cell dysfunction within the tumor microenvironment, the identification of novel immune checkpoints, JAK/STAT signaling, and the genetic drivers of NK cell leukemias. By integrating advanced molecular biology, high-throughput sequencing, functional assays, preclinical in vivo models, and patient-derived samples, we aim to improve our understanding of NK cell dysfunction and malignant transformation and to identify novel therapeutic targets for next-generation immunotherapies against solid tumors and hematological malignancies. The Gotthardt group currently consists of 4 PhD student, 3 master students and a research assistant.
Why/How are we going Green
- We collect all recyclable plastic waste generated in our laboratory separately to ensure that it can be properly recycled and to reduce the amount of plastic waste sent to disposal.
- As part of our efforts to reduce plastic waste, we have transitioned to using TipOne® tips. Starlab’s innovative TipOne® recycling Service is an important part of our efforts to support a circular economy. Empty TipOne® tip boxes are collected separately and returned to the manufacturer for recycling. This enables us to reduce waste associated with conventional plastic tip boxes.
- We aim to minimize waste in our laboratory by carefully evaluating and optimizing our experimental processes.
- We regularly defrost and clear out our -20°C and -80°C freezers to remove unnecessary or outdated materials. We also continuously optimize freezer management to minimize the time the freezers are open and avoid unnecessary long-term storage.
