Who we are
The Burgener Group is a research laboratory at the Clinical Centre of Small Animal Health
and Research at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna. Our team, which includes two
senior scientists, one postdoc, three PhD students, three Master students, and one technician,
is focused on canine intestinal, liver, and pancreatic organoids.
We've successfully established the long-term cultivation of these canine organoids, which lays
the groundwork for studying various diseases in dogs while upholding our commitment to
ethical and sustainable research practices. Our work helps us understand canine health and
the vital communication between the microbiome and the gut. Our next goal is to fabricate
microfluidic systems to study organ interactions, a further step in our mission to use innovative,
non-animal methods
Why/How are we going Green
1. We separate and collect the PP and HDPE plastic
2. Where possible we use a re-fill system for our tips to avoid additional plastic
3. We are regularly de-frosting our -20° freezers
4. The temperature of our -80°C was increased to -70°C
5. We try to store only necessary samples in the -70°C, having only one -70°C freezer for
the whole group
